Supporting the next generation of Nepal’s nurse-midwives

A professional midwife workforce is an essential resource for Nepal.

What We Do:

This scholarship funds prospective Bachelors of Midwifery students in Nepal for all 3 years of their education, as well as a small monthly stipend, in exchange for a commitment to 2 years of service after graduation as a nurse-midwife serving rural Nepali communities. The Nepali Midwifery Corps will begin with the funding of one student and plans to expand as funding allows.

This scholarship will be made possible through a collaboration with the Midwifery Society of Nepal (MIDSON), the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) which is a public academic institution, as well as the Nepal Nursing Council and the Government of Nepal’s Nursing and Social Security Division (NSSD), Department of Health Services, and Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP).

Our Mission:

To improve maternal and newborn health throughout rural Nepal by funding the education of university-prepared, professional midwives who are passionate about providing patient-focused and evidence-based care to the most underserved populations in their country.

Target Candidate:

We plan to partner with the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) in Kathmandu, Nepal at this time due to the public nature of the university, a demonstrated need for scholarship support, and the fact that many of their students originate from rural and remote areas of Nepal. One student will receive full funding in this initial stage, with plans to expand the scholarship fund in subsequent academic years.

Scholarship Requirements:

The following requirements should be met by the candidate:

  • Candidate must be a Nepali citizen.

  • Candidate should meet all the requirements for admission to the Bachelor of Midwifery education program at NAMS.

  • Written expression of commitment to rural maternity care and previous experience providing rural health care in Nepal.

  • Commitment to 2 years of service post-graduation in a rural placement as a nurse-midwife.
